Subacromial Bursitis & Impingement

This is a common cause of pain in the shoulder and is most commonly a result of poor movement of the shoulder. It may be associated with weakness of the shoulder as well. It is common in sports people that have an imbalance of the muscles around the shoulder girdle.

The majority of the treatment is physiotherapy, often aided by an injection. The aim is to restore shoulder function to optimal movement. Sometimes though pain persists and an operation is required to clear the bursitis (inflammation) in the shoulder. This can be done by keyhole surgery and day-case surgery.

The rehabilitation from the surgery is once again with the physiotherapy team and is focused on correcting any movement issues within the shoulder. This may take a number of months although many people report an early improvement in their symptoms within a few weeks.
